Sno-Way (01) 22 DriveWay Tundra Ram Snowplow Series 6’8″ or 7’6″ Blade

Product

Sno-Way 22 Straight Truck Snowplow, 6’8″ Blade

Most manufacturers treat the small truck as an afterthought and shorten a heavier blade to suit. Sno-Way went the other direction. The company put a plow on a Subaru Brat in 1978 and has spent the decades since refining what a blade for a downsized vehicle actually needs, which is why the 22 reads as a designed product rather than a cut-down one.

At 80 inches wide and 320 pounds, this is the lighter of the two blades in the 22 range. Weight is the number to watch if you are plowing with an SUV, a compact pickup or a half ton that already carries a service body, because front gross axle weight rating is what disqualifies most small vehicles from plow work, not a shortage of engine.

How the Blade Is Built

The moldboard is a steel frame carrying a polycarbonate face. Sno-Way originally chose the material so an operator could see through the blade; it stayed because it keeps mass off the front axle without giving up structural rigidity, which is the whole argument for this plow. Shock Killer trip return and Triple Coat paint protection are standard, and the top rail arrives pre-drilled so a deflector goes on later without anyone taking a bit to a new blade.

Who It’s For

Take the 6’8″ over the 7’6″ when the vehicle is at the small end of what can carry a plow at all, or when the work is tight: residential driveways with turns in them, parking stalls, anywhere you are steering more than you are pushing. Ten inches of blade is ten inches less to swing around a corner.

If the vehicle can take the weight, note that the 7’6″ version of this same plow adds only ten pounds for those ten inches, which is an unusually cheap trade. Step up to the 26 if you want a taller 26 inch moldboard on the same two blade widths to carry more snow per pass. The 22 DriveWay is the variant to look at for packed residential work, and the 22SKD is the same blade set up for a skid steer or tractor rather than a truck.

Sno-Way 22 7’6″ Straight Truck Snowplow

The interesting thing about the wide blade in the 22 range is what it does not cost. Moving from 6’8″ to 7’6″ adds ten inches of moldboard and ten pounds of plow, 320 up to 330. On a vehicle class where every pound lands on a front axle that was never rated for this work, a ten percent gain in blade for a three percent gain in weight is the rare upgrade that does not need arguing about.

Angled 30 degrees, this blade clears 78 inches against the 6’8″ blade’s 69. That nine inch difference is what decides whether a driveway takes three passes or four, and on a long approach or a small commercial lot it compounds across the whole season.

Specifications

  • Blade width: 90″ (7’6″)
  • Effective clearing width angled 30 degrees: 78″
  • Moldboard height: 22″
  • Operating weight: 330 lbs.
  • Cutting edge: 3/8″ x 6″
  • Rib structure: 4 vertical / 2 diagonal
  • Trip springs: 2

Why the Extra Width Matters

Blade width is not only about how much snow moves per pass. A blade running at an angle needs to be wide enough that the vehicle’s rear tires stay inside the cleared path, and on a full size half ton or a wider SUV the 6’8″ blade starts to give that up on a hard angle. The 7’6″ keeps the truck tracking in what it has already cleared, which matters most on the second and third pass when the windrow is building at the edge.

Everything structural is shared with the rest of the 22 range. Steel frame with a polycarbonate face to keep weight down, 3/8 by 6 inch cutting edge, four vertical and two diagonal ribs behind the moldboard, two trip springs, Shock Killer trip return and Triple Coat paint as standard.

Who It’s For

This is the 22 for a full size half ton, a larger SUV, or anyone plowing enough ground that a pass saved is worth having. Drop to the 6’8″ if the vehicle is smaller than a half ton, or if the work is tight enough that maneuvering costs you more time than passes do.

The 26 offers the same 7’6″ width on a 26 inch moldboard if you want more snow carried per pass rather than more width. For packed residential drives there is the 22 DriveWay at this same blade size, and the 22SKD puts the equivalent blade on a skid steer or tractor.
